Research Focus and Strength

Research Highlights from Faculties

Assess the blood LDL or "bad" cholesterol lowering ability through the lactic acid bacteria with probiotic characteristics isolated from a popular traditional fermented food; Tapai in Southeast Asia.

*Dr. Tan Hui Yin

The extracted natural Xanthine Oxidase Inhibitors from Chrysanthemum morifolium are characterized by metabolomics approach. It can be used to inhibit the formation of urate crystal in the joint, which leads to gouty arthritis.

*Dr. Loh Khye Er

The efficacy study on the antineoplastic properties by photosensitized chlorophyll or its metabolites extracted from Clinacanthus Nutans (aka Sabah Snake Glass) and Strobilanthes Crispus (aka Black Faced General) for prevention and inhibition of cancerous tumor development.

*A/P Dr. Loke Chui Fung

Develop polyurethanes (PUs) based on bio-based polyols from plant oil and enhance its properties through incorporating nanoparticles and additives-filled for applications such as surface coatings, adhesives, sealants or potential new applications.

*Dr. Sin Sau Leng

Using high-speed camera to capture the face micro-expression to identify head-pose variation based on the spatio-temporal face representation. The result can be used for identity verification, emotion classification, or other possible usage in law enforcement and security application.

*Dr. Goh Kam Meng

A novel machine vision framework (Malaysia Patent Application No.: PI 2016704599) that will work with the intelligent materials handling system to assist in real-time mechanical stability tests of natural rubber floccules (cis 1,4polyisoprene) during flocculation process (small rubber clump) in an aqueous medium.

*Prof. Dr. Lai Weng Kin

This project focuses on the fabrication, characterization and biocompatibility studies of cost-effective core-shell nanoparticles for their use as agents in photo-thermal treatment of skin cancers. The design of the core-shell particles would allow optimized absorption of 1064 nm Infra-red radiation which is relatively non-invasive and a surface coating to bestow good colloidal stability and selective concentration in cancer cells via the well-known enhanced permeability and retention effect. Localized hypothermia of cancer cells is to be achieved via excitation of the agents by IR with minimized side-effect.

*Dr. Lim Teck Hock

Documentation of the occurrence and distribution, characterization (with advanced microscopy and molecular tools) and development of rapid detection system to screen for the presence of fish-killing raphidophyte, Chattonella species in Malaysian coastal waters for harmful algal bloom (HAB) management. Research output may provide useful and critical information to government in HAB mitigation and risk management especially to reduce economical losses in aquaculture industry.
